Computer-Assisted Method and Device for Measuring a Surface of an Object
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
The patent describes a computer-aided method and device for measuring the surface of an object. It works by illuminating the object, capturing an image with a camera, and simulating this scene virtually. The system iteratively adjusts parameters in the virtual scene until the simulated image matches the real image, enabling precise surface measurements.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Quality control in manufacturing to inspect and measure parts' surfaces
- 3D scanning of objects for digital archiving or replication
- Surface inspection in the automotive or aerospace industries
- Reverse engineering of physical components
- Medical imaging for measuring anatomical structures
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Enables highly accurate, non-contact measurement of complex surfaces
- Automates and speeds up surface inspection processes
- Reduces human error by relying on precise computational methods
- Can adapt to various object shapes and materials by adjusting virtual parameters
- Facilitates integration into industrial production lines for real-time quality assurance

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a computer-aided method and a device for measuring a surface (22) of an object (20). The method comprises at least: illuminating the object (20) with a light source (10) in a light source position; capturing an image (40) of the object (20) with a camera (30) with the light source (10) in the light source position; inputting a virtual recording scene with parameters of the object (20), parameters of the light source (10) and properties of the virtual recording scene; calculating a virtual image (44, 44_n) of the object (20) with the virtual recording scene; determining deviations of the virtual image from the measured image (40); if the deviations violate a predetermined convergence criterion, modifying parameters of the object and calculating a new virtual image (44, 44_n+1); iterating the calculation of the virtual image (44, 44_n) and the determination of the deviations of the virtual image (44, 44_n, 44_n+1) from the measured image (40) until the deviations satisfy the at least one convergence criterion.
