Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent introduces an improved direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) that incorporates a third electrode, placed between the anode and cathode. The third electrode is designed to intercept and utilize methanol that undesirably crosses over the membrane, converting it into useful electrical energy. By electrically connecting this electrode to the cathode through a small resistor, the system not only boosts efficiency but also reduces voltage loss typically caused by methanol crossover.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Portable electronic devices (such as laptops and mobile phones) that require compact and efficient energy sources
  • Backup power systems or uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) for sensitive equipment
  • Auxiliary power units in vehicles, especially in hybrid or electric vehicles
  • Remote sensors and telemetry stations requiring long-lasting, maintenance-free energy
  • Powering small appliances or emergency equipment in off-grid settings
  • Military field devices needing silent, reliable operation

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Increases the overall efficiency of methanol fuel cells by converting otherwise wasted methanol crossover into useful electricity
  • Reduces voltage loss and associated energy waste, improving cell performance and longevity
  • Offers a simplified and potentially scalable design using commercially available materials (e.g., Nafion, Pt/Ru catalysts)
  • Allows for adjustable operational parameters by tuning the resistance between the additional electrode and the cathode
  • Enhances the practical viability of DMFCs in applications where compactness, efficiency, and reliability are critical
  • Minimizes unwanted fuel loss and environmental impact since more methanol contributes to power generation

Patent Abstract

The fuel cell has an anode, a cathode. The ion membrane as electrolyte is arranged between anode and cathode. The additional electrode (E) is arranged between the anode and the cathode and electrically connected to the cathode by resistor (R). The resistance value is set between 0.1 and 1 Ohm. The additional electrode is made of Nafion (RTM: sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene) and Platin or Ruthenium carbon supported catalyst. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) method for operating fuel cell; and (2) method for manufacturing fuel cell.
