Method and Device for Sorting Particles According to the Magnetizability Thereof
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
The invention describes a method and a device for sorting particles based on how easily they can be magnetized (magnetizability). The system uses a channel through which a particle-containing fluid flows under a uniform (homogeneous) magnetic field. Specific magnetic or magnetizable regions inside the channel attract particles differently according to their magnetizability, resulting in precise separation of different types of particles. The magnetic field strength can also be varied over time for enhanced resolution and efficiency.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Purification and separation of nanometer to micrometer-sized magnetic or magnetizable particles in industrial processes.
- Sorting cells or organelles in biomedical and biochemical research based on their magnetic properties.
- Quality control and fractionation in the manufacturing of magnetic beads or other magnetically responsive materials.
- Processing and recycling of mixed particulate materials containing different magnetizable particles.
- Sample preparation for analytical techniques that require purified or fractionated magnetizable particles.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Allows for highly precise, single-pass separation of particles based on magnetizability without needing multiple cycles.
- Simpler and more cost-effective fabrication compared to previous designs, reducing the need for integrated electrical wiring.
- The system is adaptable to different particle sizes and channel geometries, making it versatile for various applications.
- Time-varying magnetic fields reduce unwanted particle adhesion and increase the clarity of separation.
- Scalable for both microfluidic (small-scale) and industrial (large-scale) implementations.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a method and device for sorting particles according to the magnetizability thereof. According to the invention, the device comprises a channel (1) through which a fluid having particles (2) to be sorted according to magnetizability flows and in the processes passes through a homogeneous magnetic field, wherein magnetic or magnetizable regions (3) are present at least in a partial region of the cross-section of the channel (1), wherein the particles (2) can accumulate according to the magnetizability thereof on said regions. As a result, this causes a separation.
