Arrangement for Polarized Neutron Beams and Method for Polarization Analysis
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention describes a system and method for effectively polarizing neutron beams of varying wavelengths using a movable 3He neutron spin filter. Unlike traditional fixed filters that only work efficiently for a narrow range of neutron wavelengths, this system allows for the filter’s effective cell length to be dynamically adjusted—either by moving or rotating prismatic 3He-filled filter cells—in synchronization with a pulsed neutron beam. This enables efficient polarization and polarization analysis across a broad spectrum of neutron wavelengths, which is critical for many advanced materials science and physics experiments, especially those using time-of-flight (TOF) methods.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Neutron scattering experiments to study magnetic and structural properties of materials (such as superconductors, biological samples, and magnetic nanostructures).
- Neutron reflectometry and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) at large-scale facilities using time-of-flight instruments.
- Analysis of biological samples in aqueous environments to differentiate weak magnetic signals from strong background scattering.
- Quality assurance and research in nuclear physics and material sciences laboratories employing pulsed neutron sources.
- Development and optimization of advanced neutron polarization and polarization analysis devices for scientific instruments.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Enables efficient polarization of neutron beams over a wide range of wavelengths, improving experiment flexibility and effectiveness.
- Maintains high transmission and polarization efficiency, minimizing intensity losses across the spectrum.
- Allows dynamic, real-time adaptation to neutron pulses in synchronization with source timing, enabling better use of time-of-flight methods.
- Supports complex and demanding experimental setups—such as those required in advanced physics and materials science research—by allowing simultaneous polarization and polarization analysis.
- Reduces limitations posed by static neutron spin filters and extends the capabilities of neutron scattering facilities.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to an arrangement for polarised neutron beams, said arrangement comprising a 3He neutron spin filter in the beam path of a neutron beam from a neutron source for neutron beams. The invention is characterised in that the 3He neutron spin filter is movably mounted such that the effective cell length of the neutrons emerging from the neutron source can be varied in the 3He neutron spin filter. Also disclosed is a method for polarisation analysis by means of polarised neutron beams.
