Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent describes an implantable neurostimulation device designed to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders by desynchronizing abnormally synchronized neuronal activity in the brain or spinal cord. The system consists of a stimulation unit (such as electrodes or optical fibers), a measuring unit that monitors brain activity, and a control unit that adjusts the stimulation amplitude in real time, based on feedback from the measured neural signals. The stimulation pulses are specially shaped, with separate delivery and removal of electrical charge and a defined pause between pulse parts, which enhances safety and treatment efficacy.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Deep brain stimulation for treatment-resistant Parkinson's disease
  • Neuromodulation for essential tremor and dystonia
  • Spinal cord stimulation for chronic pain syndromes
  • Epilepsy treatment using responsive brain stimulation
  • Therapy for psychiatric conditions such as depression, OCD, Tourette's, or addiction
  • Stimulation therapies for movement disorders (e.g., after stroke, ataxia)
  • Tinnitus, migraine, or cluster headache management
  • Alzheimer's and other cognitive disorder interventions

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Real-time feedback modulation improves therapy precision and adaptation to patient needs
  • Enhanced desynchronization of pathological brain activity compared to traditional stimulation methods
  • Reduction of calibration complexity and need for frequent manual adjustments
  • Lower risk of tissue damage by safe, charge-balanced pulses with inter-phase pauses
  • Potential for sustained therapeutic effects with less overall stimulation
  • Versatile implementation for both electrical and optical neurostimulation
  • Applicable to a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders

Patent Abstract

The invention relates to a device for stimulation of neurons, comprising: a stimulation unit which is implantable in the body of a patient and has at least one stimulation element for applying a stimulation signal to the patient's tissue in order thereby to stimulate neurons in the brain and/or spinal cord of the patient; a measuring unit for receiving a measurement signal which reflects a neuronal activity of the stimulated neurons; and a control unit which is coupled to the stimulation unit and to the measuring unit and which generates a modulation signal from the measurement signal, modulates the amplitude of a pulse train comprising a multiplicity of individual pulses and controls the stimulation unit in such a way that the at least one stimulation element applies the amplitude-modulated pulse train as the stimulation signal in order thereby to stimulate the neurons; wherein the individual pulses each have a first pulse component and a second pulse component succeeding the first pulse component, a charge from the first pulse component and from the second pulse component is introduced into the tissue and the other pulse component receives charge from the tissue, and a pause is in each case maintained between the first pulse component and the second pulse component.
