Semi-Interpenetrating Polymer Networks as Separators for Use in Alkali Metal Batteries
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent discloses a new type of solid, solvent-free electrolyte based on a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (sIPN) for alkali metal batteries, such as lithium-metal batteries. The electrolyte is constructed from a mix of cross-linked and non-cross-linked polymers (including polyethylene oxide, polycarbonate, polycaprolactone, and polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate). This innovation leads to improved mechanical and electrical properties, yielding batteries that are safer, last longer, and perform better, particularly at low temperatures.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Lithium-metal solid-state batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
- Stationary energy storage systems for renewable energy (e.g., solar or wind power storage).
- Consumer electronics batteries, such as those in smartphones, laptops, and wearables.
- High-performance batteries for aerospace or medical devices where safety and reliability are critical.
- Flexible or thin-film batteries for smart textiles or compact devices.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Enhanced safety through solid, non-flammable and solvent-free electrolyte, reducing fire risk compared to liquid electrolytes.
- Extended battery lifetime and greater cycling stability, even under repeated charge and discharge cycles.
- Improved ionic conductivity and battery performance at low temperatures, broadening the operational temperature window.
- Reduced dendrite formation in alkali metal batteries, minimizing the risk of short-circuit and enhancing stability.
- Capability to handle higher voltages and current safely, suitable for advanced high-performance applications.
- Potential for more compact and lightweight battery designs owing to thin, mechanically robust electrolyte layers.

Patent Abstract
The present invention relates to a solvent-free solid electrolyte for an alkali metal solid battery comprising an alkali metal conducting salt and a semi-interpenetrating network (sIPN) consisting of a cross-linked and a non-crosslinked polymer, wherein the semi-interpenetrating network consists of a non-cross-linked polymer selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide (PEO), polycarbonate (PC), polycaprolactone (PCL), chain-end-modified derivatives of said polymers or mixtures of at least two components thereof and the cross-linked polymer comprises polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEG-dMA). The invention furthermore relates to a method for producing a solid electrolyte and an alkali metal battery having the solid electrolyte according to the invention.
