Linear Polyglycerol Derivatives, a Method for Manufacturing and Applications
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes new linear polyglycerol compounds that are modified by attaching multiple sugar or sugar-derivative residues, especially sialic acid derivatives, to the polymer backbone. These modified polymers can serve as highly effective and nontoxic antiviral agents, particularly for influenza, by preventing viruses from binding to and infecting host cells. The patent also covers methods for manufacturing these polymers and their use alone or in combination with neuraminidase inhibitors (such as Tamiflu) for synergistic antiviral effects.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Preventive and therapeutic treatment of influenza infections.
- Use as general antiviral agents against Orthomyxoviridae, particularly influenza A, B, and C viruses.
- As antibacterial or anti-inflammatory agents in humans or animals.
- Combined pharmaceutical preparations with neuraminidase inhibitors to enhance antiviral therapy and reduce risk of resistance.
- Potential use as carriers for further bioactive molecule delivery via their functionalizable backbone.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Higher antiviral effectiveness compared to current neuraminidase inhibitors like Tamiflu, according to in vitro and in vivo data.
- Nontoxic and biocompatible, reducing safety concerns for human and animal use.
- Prevents viral entry at the initial stage, offering potential for both treatment and prevention.
- Synergistic effects when used with traditional antivirals, enhancing efficacy and potentially lowering required drug doses.
- Customizable molecular structure and degree of substitution enable optimization for different applications.
- Reduced likelihood of toxicity relative to other polymer inhibitors and less risk of promoting viral resistance.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a linear polyglycerol compound, comprising an optionally terminally substituted backbone of linearly linked glycerol units. This linear polyglycerol compound is characterized in that it carries a plurality of substituents in the nature of covalently bound residues chosen from the group consisting of sugars and sugar derivatives, wherein a degree of substitution of the backbone is between 10 and 100 %. The invention also relates to uses of this linear polyglycerol compound, to a combination preparation of this linear polyglycerol compound and a neuraminidase inhibitor, to uses of this combination preparation and to a manufacturing method of the linear polyglycerol compound.
