Virucidal Coating Arrangement
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes a special coating system that uses two types of polymer layers to create surfaces with strong virus-killing (virucidal) properties. The first layer is a positively charged polymer that adheres to the surface, and the second is a negatively charged, specially modified polyglycerol that binds electrostatically to the first layer. This system efficiently destroys viruses on contact, making any coated surface self-disinfecting and highly effective at reducing viral transmission, particularly on filter materials.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Coating air filter materials (e.g., in HVAC systems, airplanes, hospitals) to destroy viruses on contact and improve air hygiene.
- Manufacturing protective facemasks with enhanced antiviral properties for healthcare, public, or occupational use.
- Producing self-disinfecting surfaces for high-touch areas such as hospital equipment, public transport interiors, door handles, and elevator buttons.
- Coating medical device surfaces to reduce the risk of viral contamination and transmission.
- Integrating into packaging materials for food, pharmaceuticals, or sensitive goods to prevent viral contamination.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Provides irreversible virus inactivation on surfaces, significantly reducing infection risk.
- Reduces or eliminates the need for frequent chemical disinfection and associated labor/material costs.
- Can be applied to a wide range of substrates, including polymers, metals, glass, and textiles.
- Maintains effectiveness over time, offering long-lasting virucidal protection.
- Non-toxic and biocompatible polymers make it safe for use in sensitive environments.
- Scalable industrial processes (both continuous and batch modes) allow for mass production of coated materials.
- Flexible design enables use in multiple product types and shapes.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a coating arrangement, comprising a first layer (4) and a second layer (7), wherein the first layer (4) comprises a first polymer (3) chosen from the group consisting of first hyperbranched polyglycerol derivatives, polyethylenimine, polyethylenimine derivatives, polyallylamine, and polyallylamine derivatives, wherein the second layer (7) comprises a second polymer (6) chosen from the group consisting of second polyglycerol derivatives. The second polyglycerol derivatives are linear or hyperbranched polyglycerol derivatives that are i) alkylated with an alkyl chain having at least 9 carbon atoms and ii) sulfated, sulfonated, carboxylated or phosphated, the first layer (4) is positively charged, the second layer (7) is negatively charged, and the second layer (7) adheres to the first layer (4) by electrostatic interactions. This coating arrangement exhibits excellent virucidal properties and is particularly appropriate to make substrates such as filter materials virucidal.
