Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent provides a new type of storage medium, specifically ionic liquids based on asymmetrically substituted ammonium cations, that can efficiently and reversibly absorb, store, and later release hydrogen chloride (HCl) from gas streams. The invention also covers methods for separating HCl from process gases, and using electrolysis to convert the stored HCl into hydrogen and chlorine. The ionic liquids can be recycled and reused in the process.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Industrial separation and storage of HCl from waste or by-product gases in chemical manufacturing processes.
  • Safe and efficient transport and handling of hydrogen chloride for industrial uses.
  • Generating chlorine and hydrogen gases on demand via electrolysis for use in chemical synthesis or fuel production.
  • Purification processes where HCl removal from a gas stream improves product quality or process performance.
  • Supplying chlorine for downstream synthetic applications such as phosgene or isocyanate production.

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Enables efficient, reversible, and safe storage and separation of hydrogen chloride from gas streams.
  • Reduces the need for energy-intensive and costly HCl separation processes.
  • Offers low-viscosity, high-conductivity ionic liquids that are easily synthesized from inexpensive materials.
  • Allows for the on-demand generation of chlorine and hydrogen by electrolysis at low cell voltages.
  • Minimizes equipment corrosion and allows use of less expensive electrodes (e.g., carbon instead of precious metals).
  • Improves process flexibility by allowing reuse and recycling of the ionic liquid storage medium.
  • Enhances safety and ease of handling compared to gaseous or aqueous HCl.

Patent Abstract

The present invention relates to a storage medium for storing hydrogen chloride (HCI) comprising at least one ionic compound of the general formulae (I)         [NR1aR2bR3c][Cl(HCl)n]     (I)Wherein R1, R2, R3 being independent from each other an alkyl moiety selected from the group of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl and sec-butyl, preferably methyl, ethyl, n-propyl; Wherein at least one of the moieties R1, R2, R3 differs from each of the others moieties R1, R2, R3; Wherein a, b, c are independently from each other 0, 1, 2 or 3, wherein the sum of a+b+c always has to be 4; Wherein n >= 1, preferably n = 1-6, more preferably n = 1, 2, 3, 4, with a viscosity in a range between 5 and 50 mPas, preferably between 10 and 20 mPas (25 °C, 1000 hPa).
