Method and Kit for Testing Various Selected Materials And/or Surface Structures for Culturing Cells
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes a method and a kit for evaluating different materials or surface structures for their suitability in culturing cells or microorganisms. The key innovation is the use of cup-shaped inserts, each made from or coated with the material or surface structure to be tested, which fit precisely into wells of standard multi-well plates used in cell culture. This setup ensures that cells are only exposed to the test material, eliminating interference from other substances, and allows for parallel and reproducible testing of multiple materials or surfaces in a convenient, high-throughput format.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Testing and comparing new biomaterials for cell culture compatibility in medical, pharmaceutical, and biotech research.
- Screening polymers, coatings, or surface modifications for use in tissue engineering or implantable devices.
- Assessing the effect of different surface structures or chemistries on cell growth, adhesion, or function.
- Rapid prototyping and validation of small quantities of novel materials before scaling up manufacturing.
- Quality control in the manufacturing of cultureware to assure consistent cell response across batches.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Ensures cells only interact with the test material, reducing experimental artifacts from supporting structures.
- Works with standard multi-well plates, leveraging existing laboratory equipment and workflows.
- Allows for high-throughput, parallel testing of many materials or surface structures simultaneously.
- Minimizes the amount of new material required for testing, which is especially valuable for novel or expensive substances.
- Facilitates automated and reproducible assessments, improving the speed, cost-efficiency, and reliability of material evaluation for cell culture.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a method for testing various selected materials and/or surface structures for culturing cells and/or microorganisms, comprising the steps of: i) providing a plurality of various selected materials and/or surface structures to be tested in the form of cup-shaped inserts, wherein the cup-shaped inserts are sized such that a cup-shaped insert can be inserted into a recess of a multi-well plate suitable for cell culturing in a substantially precisely-fit manner, wherein each cup-shaped insert has walls, a floor and an opening on the side facing away from the floor, wherein the walls and floor of the cup-shaped inserts are designed to be fluid-sealed and wherein each cup-shaped insert has one selected material and/or selected surface structure at least on the inner face of the floor; ii) inserting the cup-shaped inserts in recesses of multi-well plates of corresponding sizing such that the exterior side of the cup floor points in the direction of the interior side of the floor of a recess of the multi-well plate; and iii) culturing of cells in the lumen of the cup-shaped inserts. The invention further relatets to a kit for performing said method.
