Sample Holder for Automated Sample Exchange
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes a specialized sample holder designed for automated, robot-assisted sample exchange, particularly in the context of x-ray crystallography and protein crystal analysis. The holder features an innovative two-ring design connected by struts, with predetermined breaking points allowing part of the holder to be easily and automatically removed. It also serves dually as a lid for microtiter plate wells during crystal growth, enabling direct transfer of crystals for measurement without manual sample handling.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Automated protein crystal screening and analysis in x-ray crystallography labs.
- Integration into robotic systems for high-throughput crystal sample handling in research and industrial settings.
- In-situ analysis and screening of protein, organic, or inorganic crystal growth without manual intervention.
- Use as a standardized, dual-purpose lid and sample holder in automated crystallization platforms.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Reduces handling and potential damage to fragile crystals by enabling direct, in-situ measurement.
- Improves efficiency and throughput in automated crystallography workflows.
- Minimizes sample loss and contamination risks associated with manual sample transfers.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a sample holder (1) for mounting on a goniometer head, which sample holder comprises an outer peripheral edge element (1) and an inner peripheral edge element (3) spaced apart from the outer edge element (2). A holder (5), which extends beyond the outer edge element (2), is arranged on the inner edge element (3). Furthermore, at least one strut (4), which connects the two edge elements (2, 3) to each other, a cover film (6) spanning the outer edge element (2), and a sample film (4) spanning the inner edge element (3) are comprised, both films (6, 7) being spaced apart from each other. The sample holder is in particular configured to also serve as a lid for a cavity of a microtiter plate. According to the invention, the outer edge element (2) is provided with predetermined breaking points at the transitions to the holder and the strut (4) is provided with predetermined breaking points at the transition to the inner edge element (3).
