Neutron conductor system
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention describes a neutron conductor system (neutron guide system) that efficiently directs neutrons from a source to a destination using non-linear guide sections with varying cross-sections, combined with a central mirror-surfaced guide section oriented at a small angle. This arrangement blocks direct line-of-sight between the neutron source and the output, minimizing unwanted fast neutrons while maximizing usable neutron transmission. The system effectively uses elliptical, parabolic, or polygonal shapes for the neutron guides, enhancing focusing and transmission without complex internal absorbers.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Neutron beamlines at research reactors or spallation sources for experimental physics.
- Neutron scattering instruments for material science studies (e.g., SANS, reflectometry).
- Neutron imaging and tomography systems.
- Neutron radiography for quality control in manufacturing (e.g., aerospace components).
- Medical applications involving neutron beams, such as Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT).
- Homeland security—neutron-based scanning and detection systems.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Higher neutron transmission rates compared to traditional guide systems.
- Reduces the need for expensive and bulky neutron shielding by blocking direct line-of-sight from source to output.
- Minimizes absorption losses of valuable low-divergence neutrons.
- Enables the focusing of neutron beams onto small samples or specific points for high-precision experiments.
- Simpler and more cost-effective construction, as complex absorber modifications inside the guide are unnecessary.
- Flexible configuration possible for a variety of applications and geometries (elliptical, parabolic, polygonal guides).
- Potential for more homogeneous neutron beam divergence, improving data quality in experiments.

Patent Abstract
The neutron guide system has a source (Q) for generating neutrons. Two neutron guides are arranged non-linearly, and are provided with narrowing and widening cross-sections. The neutron beam emerging from the source is passed to small opening of the first neutron guide and the large opening of the second neutron guide. The inner surface of the neutron guide is formed as a mirror (S) arranged at slight angle of 0.01[deg] to 5[deg] with respect to neutron beam axis (Z).
