Cathode and Method for Its Manufacture
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes a novel cathode material and manufacturing method for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The cathode is composed of an advanced imine-linked polymer structure, aluminum foil, lithium sulfide and/or sulfur particles, and a conductive carbon additive. The unique arrangement and strong covalent bonding within the polymer structure result in a cathode with enhanced mechanical stability and high capacity retention over many charge/discharge cycles. Compared to existing cathodes, these offer significantly better specific capacities (often over 400 to 800 mAh/g) and improved overall battery performance.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- High-energy density rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for consumer electronics (laptops, smartphones, tablets)
- Battery packs for electric vehicles and e-mobility devices
- Grid-scale energy storage systems requiring long battery lifetime and high performance
- Low-weight, high-capacity batteries for aerospace and drone applications
- Advanced power sources in medical devices and wearables
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Significantly higher specific capacity than common commercial cathodes (e.g., >400–800 mAh/g vs <200 mAh/g)
- Excellent cycling stability, retaining high capacity over 50+ cycles
- Enhanced mechanical and chemical resilience due to covalent bonding in polymer structure
- Flexible manufacturing processes allowing for industrial scale-up
- Potential for reduced costs and environmental impact due to alternative active materials (lithium sulfide/sulfur)
- Compatibility with standard lithium-ion battery architectures

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a cathode for a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, comprising the components: - a polymer structure, - an aluminium foil, - lithium sulphide particles and/or sulphur particles, and - a carbon additive, wherein the polymer structure is formed alternately (AB)n from the monomers A and B via an imine linkage, and wherein the polymer structure has an aromatic or heteroaromatic branching core and an aromatic or heteroaromatic bridge, and wherein the aromatic or heteroaromatic branching core is formed from the monomeric unit of monomer A and the aromatic or heteroaromatic bridge is formed from the monomeric unit of monomer B, and wherein the monomers A have at least three amine end groups and at least one aromatic or heteroaromatic ring, and wherein the monomers B have at least two aldehyde or keto end groups and at least one aromatic or heteroaromatic ring, and wherein the carbon additive is selected from the group of carbon particles (CB) and/or Ketjen black (KB). The invention also relates to a method for producing a cathode for a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
