Treating plastic surfaces useful e.g. for improving adhesion and increasing smear resistance between plastic and friction-reducing low-maintenance layer, comprises carrying out ultraviolet-induced treatment of the surface without water
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes a method for treating plastic surfaces by exposing them to ultraviolet (UV) light without using water. The process is specifically aimed at improving the adhesion of coatings and increasing the resistance of plastic surfaces to smearing when these are covered by friction-reducing or low-maintenance layers. The invention also covers plastics treated in this manner, especially those with ring-based polymers, as well as films and fabrics made from such plastics.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Enhancing adhesion between plastic substrates and friction-reducing or low-maintenance coatings in automotive parts
- Improving the durability of plastic packaging materials by strengthening adhesion with barrier layers
- Manufacturing anti-smear electronic device housings or components with improved surface coatings
- Producing high-performance polymeric films for industrial or consumer applications where surface adhesion is critical
- Improving the printability and durability of plastics used in textiles, banners, or specialty fabrics
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Provides a water-free UV treatment method, reducing the risk of moisture-related issues
- Enhances adhesion properties between plastics and coatings, leading to longer-lasting products
- Increases smear resistance, which improves the longevity and appearance of coated plastic items
- Suitable for use with a variety of plastics, especially those based on ring-containing polymers
- Enables more effective manufacturing of multi-layer plastic materials and composites

Patent Abstract
Treating plastic surfaces for improving adhesion, comprises carrying out UV-induced treatment of the surface without water. Independent claims are also included for: (1) plastics comprising ring-based polymers and having a functional surface of ring opening products of the aromatic components, where the lower layers remain unchanged, which are obtainable by a UV-treatment at a wavelength of less than 380 nm in the presence of atmospheric gases and ozone; and (2) films or fabrics comprising the plastics.
