Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This invention describes a device designed to detect image manipulation, such as morphing, in a digital reference face image stored on a person's identity document (e.g., passport). The device reads the stored face image from the ID, captures a live digital face image of the person, and uses a recognition unit to extract biometric features from both images. It compares these features to generate an indicator of possible image manipulation, and uses statistical or neural network analysis to determine if the reference image has been altered.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Automated border control gates to prevent passport or ID fraud via manipulated images
  • Identity verification at airports, train stations, or secure facilities
  • Passport or ID issuance authorities to detect fraudulent applications with manipulated photos
  • Corporate access control systems using facial recognition for secure entry
  • Banking or financial services for customer identity verification when issuing new cards or accounts
  • Forensic analysis of digital IDs in law enforcement investigations

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Enhances security by detecting manipulated facial images, such as morphing, that could allow multiple people to use a single ID
  • Reduces risk of identity fraud and unauthorized access to secure areas
  • Offers automated, reliable detection suitable for high-throughput environments (e.g., borders)
  • Can adapt to various types of identity documents and biometric markers
  • Supports both statistical and AI-based detection for higher accuracy
  • Improves trust and efficiency in digital identity verification processes
  • Assists human operators by highlighting suspicious areas for further inspection

Patent Abstract

The invention relates to a device (100) for detecting image manipulation in a digital reference facial image of a person. The device (100) comprises a document reader (101) which is configured to read out the digital reference facial image of the person from an identity document of the person. The device (100) further comprises an image sensor (103) which is configured to capture a digital facial image of the person. The device (100) further comprises a detection device (105) which is configured to detect a biometric reference feature in the digital reference facial image, to detect a biometric feature in the digital facial image of the person, to compare the biometric reference feature with the biometric feature in order to obtain a manipulation indicator, and to detect the image manipulation in the digital reference facial image on the basis of the manipulation indicator. The device (100) can further comprise a database (107) in which a biometric comparison reference feature is stored.
