Device for Determining Vertebra Spacing in the Spinal Column
AISimple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention provides a portable device for measuring the spacing between vertebrae in a patient's spinal column, even while the patient is walking indoors or outdoors. The device uses at least two flexibly connected ultrasonic probes mounted on a carrier system placed along the spine, capturing and measuring the distances between vertebral processes in real-time. These probes are connected to a data processing system that stores and analyzes the ultrasound signals, allowing for visual representation and further assessment of the spine’s movement and condition.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Monitoring spine health and intervertebral spacing in patients with suspected or existing back disorders during natural movement.
- Assessment of spinal posture, alignment, and abnormal movement patterns outside the clinic, such as during daily activities or rehabilitation exercises.
- Early detection and tracking of degenerative spinal conditions or disc issues over time, possibly preventing further injury.
- Research studies on spinal biomechanics and motion analysis by capturing real-time data during various activities.
- Assistance in physiotherapy, sports medicine, or occupational health to evaluate therapy outcomes and suggest adjustments.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Non-invasive and mobile measurement of vertebra spacing while the patient is in motion, not limited to a stationary clinical environment.
- Real-time data acquisition allows for dynamic assessment, potentially capturing pathological movements or pain-inducing postures that only occur during activity.
- Flexible and minimally intrusive device design ensures patient comfort during use.
- Integration with data processing systems enables advanced visualization and analysis, supporting better diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Potential to improve patient monitoring and longitudinal tracking through repeatable, consistent measurements.
- Supports personalized therapy and rehabilitation by providing objective feedback on spinal position and movement.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to devices for determining vertebra spacing in the spinal column. The devices are characterized in particular in that vertebra spacing of the patient can be determined easily while walking in a building or outdoors. To this end, at least two ultrasonic probes are flexibly connected to each other and disposed in the direction of the spinal column on a carrier system for detecting the spacing either of vertebra processes or between vertebra processes and bones connected to the spinal column, wherein the center axis of the spinal column is between the groups. At least one coupling for the ultrasonic waves of the ultrasonic probes is further disposed between said probes and the surface of the skin. The ultrasonic probes are further connected to a data processing system at least for storing the returning sound wave impulses of the ultrasonic probes, converted into electrical signals.
