Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent describes an improved surgical retractor and retractor system equipped with a special flat spring at its core. The retractor has two main segments connected by a wave-shaped flat spring, which allows controlled movement and limits the amount of force applied to organs or tissues during surgery. The design also features a mechanical indicator to display the force being exerted, and incorporates shapes and materials that enhance sterilizability, durability, and ease of manufacturing.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Maintaining clear access to organs and tissues during various surgical procedures
  • Safeguarding sensitive organs, such as the liver or skin, from excessive and sustained pressure during operations
  • Integrating with existing surgical retractor support systems in operating rooms
  • Retrofitting traditional wound hooks with the new force-limiting mechanism for improved safety

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Limits and indicates the force applied to organs, reducing the risk of tissue damage, bleeding, or necrosis
  • Enhanced sterilizability due to minimal crevices and smooth surfaces, decreasing risk of post-operative infections
  • Improved durability and reproducibility for cost-effective, long-term use in hospital settings
  • Simplifies cleaning and reduces the risk of trapped contaminants compared to conventional coil spring designs
  • Compatible with existing surgical systems, allowing easy adoption and retrofitting
  • Prevents mechanical failure and excessive stretching during use with built-in movement limiters

Patent Abstract

The invention relates to a retractor (10) for surgical operations, comprising: a longitudinally extending main part (12), at one end (14) of which a wound hook (16) is directly or indirectly arranged, wherein the main part (12) comprises two segments (20, 22) arranged along a main axis at a distance (24) from one another; and a spring element, which interconnects the two segments (20, 22) such that it is possible for both segments (20, 22) to move in relation to one another along the main axis. In order to improve said retractor such that the force acting on an organ is limited and also such that the requirements of sterilisability, durability and reproducibility are met, according to the invention the spring element should be designed as a flat spring (26). The invention also relates to a retractor system comprising a retractor.
