Metamaterial Coil for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Assembly and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Assembly
AISimple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention describes a wireless metamaterial coil designed for use in MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) systems. The coil has an open central area (opening) surrounded by resonant cells made of metamaterial, allowing high-quality imaging while leaving access for procedures directly through the opening. The design overcomes prior limitations where traditional coils interfered with access to the patient, thus enabling simultaneous MRI monitoring and interventional medical procedures (such as surgery or biopsies) without cable clutter or loss of image quality.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- MRI-guided minimally invasive surgeries and interventions, such as biopsies, ablations, or needle guidance, where direct access to the patient is needed.
- Real-time MRI imaging during interventional radiology procedures.
- Use in flexible, cable-free MRI coil arrays for better workflow and sterility in medical environments.
- Integration with robot-assisted or mechanical interventional systems requiring precise MRI monitoring and tool passage through the coil opening.
- Enhanced imaging of hard-to-reach body regions, especially where coil placement and access remain challenging.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Allows high-quality MRI imaging with improved signal-to-noise ratio, even in the intervention area.
- Enables unimpeded access for medical procedures, as instruments and tools can be passed directly through the opening in the coil.
- Wireless design reduces cable clutter, improves patient/table access, and simplifies maintaining sterility.
- Flexible and easily manufacturable design that can conform to patient surfaces and be made cost-effectively.
- Can be combined with conventional coils for further improved imaging performance.
- Opens up new workflow possibilities and real-time monitoring for MRI-guided surgeries and therapies.

Patent Abstract
The invention, which relates to a metamaterial coil (2) for a magnetic resonance imaging assembly (1) and to a magnetic resonance imaging assembly (1), is based on the object of specifying a metamaterial coil (2) which combines a high image quality and the possibility of an unimpeded medical procedure on the patient (10). This object is achieved by way of a metamaterial coil (2), wherein the metamaterial coil (2) has a plane with an open space (12), wherein multiple unit cells (13), which form a resonator of the metamaterial coil (2), are arranged around the open space (12) in the plane of the metamaterial coil (2) and wherein an opening (11) is arranged within the open space (12).
