Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent introduces a cylinder assembly and cooling method for internal combustion engines that actively controls heat transfer from the combustion chamber to the surrounding engine block or crankcase based on temperature. It uses a special, temperature-responsive jacket around the cylinder liner that creates an insulating gap at low temperatures (reducing heat loss and speeding up engine warm-up), but closes the gap at operating temperatures to ensure efficient cooling.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Automotive engines (cars, trucks, motorcycles) to reduce fuel consumption and emissions during warm-up
  • Industrial or stationary internal combustion engines for improved energy efficiency
  • Engines operating in cold climates to enhance low-temperature performance
  • Application in engines requiring rapid catalyst activation (e.g., for emissions compliance)
  • Any internal combustion engine where fast warm-up and optimized thermal management are beneficial

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Faster engine warm-up, leading to improved fuel efficiency
  • Quicker achievement of catalytic converter light-off, reducing pollutant emissions
  • Reduced wear due to controlled temperature transition and optimized start-up
  • Potential for lower fuel consumption during cold starts
  • System is passive (no sensors or electronics required) or can be made active for enhanced control
  • Adaptable to various combustion engine types and can improve operation in cold environments

Patent Abstract

The invention, which relates to a cylinder arrangement (1) and a method for cooling the cylinder arrangement (1), addresses the problem of specifying a solution with which the heat transfer from a combustion chamber (6) of an internal combustion engine located in a cylinder liner (2) of the cylinder arrangement (1) into a region (7) surrounding the cylinder liner (2), such as a cylinder block or a cylinder crankcase, is controlled in a temperature-dependent manner. The arrangement solves said problem by virtue of the fact that a jacket (9), the expansion of which changes depending on temperature, is arranged between the cylinder liner (2) and the region (7) surrounding the cylinder liner (2). The method solves said problem by virtue of the fact that: the cylinder liner (2) is provided with a jacket (9), the expansion of which changes depending on temperature and which surrounds the cylinder liner (2); the jacket (9) forms a gap (10) between the jacket (9) and the region (7) in a first temperature range; and the jacket (9) forms no gap (10) between the jacket (9) and the region (7) in a second temperature range.
