The invention relates to an examination apparatus for performing diagnostic examinations and/or therapeutic procedures on the body of a patient, the examination apparatus having at least one patient bed, on which the patient can be examined whilst recumbent, and at least one main examination unit, by means of which the examination of the patient can be performed, the patient bed being spaced from the main examination unit and being at least partially movable into an examination area surrounded by the main examination unit in order for the examination to be performed by means of the main examination unit, a cantilever arm protruding from the main examination unit being arranged on the main examination unit and extending above the patient bed at least over a partial region of the longitudinal extension of the patient bed, the cantilever arm being spaced from the patient bed such that the patient can position himself/herself on the patient bed beneath the cantilever arm.
