Flexible metal-graphite distribution plate for a fuel cell
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention relates to a special fluid distribution plate for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The plate is constructed from an impermeable, electrically conductive metal (e.g., stainless steel) and incorporates a recessed area covered by a flexible graphite foil. This graphite foil forms enclosed distribution channels for gases or coolant fluids needed in the fuel cell, and these channels do not contact the underlying metal surface. This hybrid design improves mechanical robustness while retaining the desirable conductive and chemical-resistant properties of graphite in specified regions.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Fuel cells for automotive vehicles (e.g., hydrogen-powered cars and buses)
- Stationary PEM fuel cell modules for backup or distributed power generation
- Portable fuel cell systems (e.g., for electronics or unmanned vehicles)
- Industrial or commercial fuel cell installations requiring compact, robust stacks
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Improved mechanical strength and crack resistance compared to all-graphite plates, allowing for thinner, lighter assemblies
- Enhanced manufacturability and compatibility with automated production due to the robust metal base
- Chemical stability where needed via the graphite foil, minimizing corrosion risks from aggressive reactant gases or coolants
- Lower electrical contact resistance and improved durability through the specific arrangement and optional copper/nickel/gold surface coatings
- Tight fluid sealing and longer system life thanks to flexible graphite and specialized adhesives filling micro-gaps and isolating fluid circuits

Patent Abstract
A plate (11) is made from an electrically conductive material impermeable to all fluids used in the fuel cell assembly. The plate has a useful surface (S) over which gases used in electrochemical reaction in a fuel cell are distributed, and a recess that is defined by forming a peripheral section (P) thicker than the useful surface. A flexible graphite foil (11C) is applied over the entire surface of the recess, and having a distribution channel (111) for one fluid in the fuel cell. The distribution channel is completely formed in the graphite foil, and does not contact the useful surface.
