Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Eisen(III)-chlorid aus eisenhaltigen Rohstoffen mit einem Eisengehalt von ≥ 1 m%, bezogen auf die Gesamtmasse der Rohstoffe, wobei die Rohstoffe in Form von Partikeln eingesetzt werden, mit den Schritten a) Vermischen der Rohstoffe mit festem Ammoniumchlorid, b) Erhitzen des in a) erhaltenen Gemischs auf 250 bis 450 °C in einem Inertgasstrom oder in einer Quarzglasampulle im Vakuum zur Erzeugung gasförmigen Eisen(III)-chlorids und c) Abkühlen des in b) erhaltenen gasförmigen Eisen(III)-chlorids, zum Erhalt festen Eisen(III)-chlorids.
