Compositions for Coating Substrate Surfaces
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes novel chemical compositions for coating substrate surfaces, particularly to protect materials like wood from environmental effects. The invention features formulations based on specific silane compounds that, when mixed and cured, result in durable, transparent, and mechanically robust coatings. These coatings are free from so-called Q-groups, making them more flexible and less prone to cracking than traditional sol-gel coatings. The compositions are notable for their room-temperature curing, high stability, and applicability to a wide range of materials, including wood, plastics, metals, and ceramics.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Protective coatings for outdoor wooden structures (e.g., decks, fences, facades)
- Clear, durable coatings for furniture, flooring, or cabinetry
- Protective films on plastics, metals, ceramic, or glass surfaces in industrial or consumer products
- Barrier layers in construction, packaging, or electronics to provide environmental resistance
- Coatings for paper or cardboard to improve durability or moisture resistance
- Production of specialty molded parts via infiltration or casting with the composition
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Provides durable, thermally and mechanically stable coatings at room temperature or mild heat, enabling energy savings and easier processing
- Coatings are highly transparent and can be applied in thin or thick layers without cracking
- Free of Q-groups, resulting in greater flexibility and reduced risk of brittle fractures or delamination
- Significant resistance to moisture, fungus and environmental exposure, extending substrate life
- Customizable with additives (such as fillers) for additional functional properties (e.g., color, optical, electrical, or barrier properties)
- Applicable to a wide variety of materials and through various conventional coating methods (brushing, spraying, dipping)
- Compositions are storage-stable for several months, supporting practical industrial use

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a composition which is prepared by reacting at least the components (a) a compound of general formula (I), in which R1 is selected from the group consisting of a branched or unbranched alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, an aryl group and an alkylaryl group; R2, R3 and R4, independently of one another, represent in each case a branched or unbranched alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; (b) a (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trialkoxysilane; and (c) water, wherein the composition does not contain any Q groups.
