Orthosis for a Body Joint
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes an innovative orthosis (brace) for body joints, particularly for the knee, which features a compensation mechanism to address the problem of axis misalignment between the human joint and the orthotic hinge. The orthosis comprises two segments, connected by a hinge, and includes a mechanism that allows relative movement to at least partially compensate for the mismatch in movement axes, thereby reducing unwanted forces and slippage during motion. The orthosis may include linear or non-linear guides, adjustable locking, sensors, and a control unit for optimal adaptation to the user's movements.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Knee braces for patients recovering from injuries or surgeries, such as ACL reconstruction
- Orthoses for other body joints prone to complex movement, such as elbow or ankle supports
- Assistive devices for individuals with joint instability or biomechanical deficiencies
- Sports rehabilitation and injury prevention supports
- Custom orthopedic solutions for individuals with atypical joint kinematics
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Reduces unwanted forces (binding forces) and slippage (migration) during joint movement, improving patient comfort and joint protection
- Compensates for inevitable axis mismatches between the orthosis and human joint, enabling more natural movement
- Helps prevent the orthosis from sliding down or requiring frequent repositioning, increasing patient satisfaction
- Potentially adjustable or adaptable to individual kinematics via sensors or control units, offering customized support
- Can improve the biomechanical performance and acceptance of joint orthoses in both medical and sports applications

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to an orthosis for a body joint, in particular a knee orthosis, with a first orthosis segment (20), which is formed with a first body-part receiver and with a first fastening means (22), which is configured to fasten the first orthosis segment (20) to a body part on a first side of the body joint, a second orthosis segment (21), which is formed with a second body-part receiver and with a second fastening means (23), which is configured to fasten the second orthosis segment (20) to a body part on a second side of the body joint, a hinge device (26) which is assigned to the body joint and via which the first and second orthosis segments (20, 21) are connected in an articulated manner, and a compensating mechanism which is designed to at least partially free a relative movement arising on account of an axis mismatch between a body-joint axis of the body joint and a hinge axis of the hinge device (29).
