Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent describes a method and device for pure optical regeneration of phase-modulated optical signals, improving their pulse shape, amplitude, timing, and phase. The invention enables optical signals, especially those using phase modulation techniques like DPSK, to be refreshed entirely within the optical domain—restoring both amplitude and phase information, which are typically degraded during long-distance transmission. It achieves this by separating the incoming optical signal's timing (clock recovery) from its phase information, converting phase modulation to amplitude modulation, and then applying this to regenerate a clean, phase-corrected output signal using a nonlinear optical phase modulator.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Optical fiber communications for long-haul transmission networks that use phase-modulated formats.
  • High-speed optical data links in data centers or telecom backbones where signal integrity over distance is critical.
  • Upgrading older optical networks to support modern phase-based modulation schemes without complete replacement of infrastructure.
  • Integration into compact or chip-scale optical signal regeneration modules for advanced photonic circuits.
  • Enabling future high-capacity or ultra-low-latency communication systems relying on phase-modulated signals.

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Provides full '3R' optical regeneration (reamplification, reshaping, retiming) and also regenerates the phase—a significant advance over prior systems that ignored phase.
  • Reduces noise and jitter, thus improving signal quality and data integrity over longer distances.
  • Simplifies device integration due to the compact and potentially low-cost design (e.g., using semiconductor optical amplifiers).
  • Supports a variety of phase modulation formats (including DPSK, PSK, BPSK), offering flexibility for network operators.
  • Reduces the need for costly electrical conversion or electronic signal processing, enabling all-optical signal paths.

Patent Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a device for pure optical regeneration of phase-modulated optical signals with regard to pulse shape pulse height timing and phase. The following steps are carried out: preparation of a phase-modulated optical signal for regeneration, introduction of the input signal to a timing recovery device (2) and to a phase/amplitude converter (1), in the timing recovery device (2), regeneration of the input signal with regard to pulse shape, pulse height and timing with loss of phase information for the input signal and with a creation of a regenerated clock signal, in the phase/amplitude converter (1), conversion of the phase modulation of the input signal into an amplitude modulation with generation of an amplitude-modulated data signal and modulation to the phase of the regenerated clock signal corresponding to the amplitude-modulated data signal in a phase modulator (3) with non-linear characteristics.
