Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent describes an improved method and device for thermal spray coating, particularly arc spraying, which uses a modulated or pulsating high-velocity gas flow to apply molten metal onto surfaces. The innovation lies in generating compressed gas in pulses, rather than a continuous flow, which prevents the undesirable buildup of eddies (turbulent regions) and the sticking of molten material to the nozzle or the filler wires. This results in more efficient and higher-quality coatings.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Industrial coating of machine parts for wear or corrosion resistance
  • Repair or refurbishment of worn industrial equipment surfaces
  • Protective coatings for automotive, aerospace, or marine components
  • Application of functional layers on tools or dies
  • Coating small parts or components where material efficiency is critical

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Reduces formation of unwanted eddies, leading to more uniform coatings
  • Prevents or removes molten particles from depositing on the nozzle or filler material, decreasing maintenance needs and downtime
  • Enhances material efficiency by minimizing waste from recirculating or lost particles
  • Enables higher particle velocities (over 300 m/s), resulting in better adhesion and stronger, more homogeneous coatings
  • Allows dynamic adjustment and control of the coating process for different materials and requirements
  • Can be implemented with minor modifications to existing spray equipment
  • Improves overall coating quality, including reduced oxidation and better layer uniformity

Patent Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a device for thermal spraying, in particular for arc spraying using a filler material (3), which is melted by an arc generated by means of electrodes, wherein the compressed gas (8) flows out through a nozzle (7) at high velocity and sprays the molten filler material (3) onto a prepared surface (1a), and wherein, according to the invention, the compressed gas (8) is generated with a modulated/pulsating gas flow having high velocity, whereby an undesirably developing eddy region of the molten material in the region of the ends of the filler material (3) is restricted or prevented. The device comprises a unit for generating the compressed gas (8) having high velocity and means by which the modulated/pulsating gas flow having high velocity can be generated such that particles/drops of the molten material are prevented from depositing or staying on the nozzle (7) and/or on the filler material (3) and/or particles/drops that have been deposited thereon are detached.
