Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent describes a fluidic actuator, which is a small device capable of moving or controlling the flow of fluids (such as liquids or gases) using an internal substance that can be activated (for example, by electricity) to change pressure inside the device. The inventive aspect is the use of a deformable sealing arrangement made with or coated by paraffin, enabling the actuator to be tightly sealed for long storage life while still allowing for efficient movement when activated. The paraffin layer provides both flexibility (for movement) and an effective barrier against evaporation or leakage.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Microfluidic systems in medical diagnostics (lab-on-chip devices, point-of-care testing)
  • Miniaturized pumps and valves for biochemical analysis equipment
  • Drug delivery systems requiring precise fluid control and long shelf-life
  • Portable fluidic actuators in environmental sensors or portable analysis devices
  • Precision inkjet or chemical dispensing systems
  • Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) or soft robotics applications

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Significantly extends storage (shelf) life of the actuator due to low water vapor permeability of paraffin
  • Reduces evaporation and leakage of sensitive fluids, enhancing device reliability and accuracy
  • Provides high flexibility and stretchability, allowing large volume expansion movements without compromising the seal
  • Compatible with a wide range of activation methods (electrochemical, thermal, etc.) and substances (liquid, gel, etc.)
  • Reversible operation is possible with elastic membrane designs, increasing device reusability
  • Versatile manufacturing options (coating, printing, dipping) and material combinations allow adaptation to different application requirements

Patent Abstract

The invention relates to a fluidic actuator comprising a base arrangement (1, 10) having at least one cavity (6) formed therein, an activatable substance (20) inside the cavity (6), and a deformable closure arrangement. The activatable substance, for example, an electrolyte, can be at least partially converted by suitable activation and at the same time cause a pressure change in the cavity (6). The deformable closure arrangement (30; 4) serves to close the cavity (6). The deformable closure arrangement comprises a paraffin-containing element (30; 40) and upon activation of the activatable substance (20) can be deformed owing to the pressure change of the activatable substance. A corresponding production method comprises the following steps: preparing the base arrangement (1, 10); forming a cavity (6) open on at least one side in the base arrangement (1, 10); and closing the cavity with the deformable closure arrangement (30; 4) that comprises a paraffin-containing element (30; 40).
