Clinching Tool That Joins Overlapping Sheet Workpieces with a Flat Surface Finish
AISimple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention relates to a tool designed for creating strong mechanical joints between overlapping sheet-like workpieces. The tool uses a combination of a flat-surfaced counter tool, a holder, and a punch to press the sheets together, forming a depression and an undercut that result in a secure mechanical connection. The system allows independent movement of the punch and a surrounding annular tool, which helps flatten the joint area and increase the strength of the connection, ultimately leaving both surfaces smooth.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Automotive manufacturing for joining metal panels without welding
- Appliance assembly where sheet metal parts must be joined securely
- Construction of aircraft structures using overlapping metal sheets
- Sheet metal fabrication in furniture or industrial equipment
- Production of enclosures or casings made from multiple sheet metal layers
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Provides strong, reliable mechanical joints without the need for welding or adhesives
- Maintains flat, smooth surfaces on both sides after joining, improving aesthetics and functionality
- The joint is easy to create with simple operation, enhancing manufacturing efficiency
- Reduces potential for damage to the workpieces during assembly
- Allows for precise, repeatable joining in automated or manual production environments

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to tools for producing mechanical joining connections of overlapping plate-shaped workpieces with a counter-tool having a flat surface, a hold-down element, and a punch, such that the plate-shaped workpieces are mechanically connected to one another by means of pressing the punch into the workpieces arranged one above the other between the counter-tool and the hold-down element, wherein a depression and an undercut form between the workpieces during the forming process. These are distinguished in particular by the fact that simple and firm connections can be realized. For this purpose, the punch and an annular tool surrounding the punch are independently movable through an opening of the hold-down element. Furthermore, the punch-side elevation of the joining area that forms during the pressing of the punch into the workpieces is leveled with the annular tool pressing on the elevation, so that the undercut increases and a flat surface on both sides of the plate-shaped workpieces connected to one another is present.
