Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This invention describes a method and device for braking a rotating element, such as an axle or wheel, using a rotating eddy current brake with advanced control. The key innovation lies in dynamically adjusting the rotational speed of the stator's electromagnetic field to precisely control the braking force on the rotor, based on real-time measurements and target parameters. This results in optimized, controllable braking performance suitable for applications like railway vehicles.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Braking systems for railway vehicles (e.g., trains, trams)
  • Braking heavy machinery or industrial rotating equipment
  • Non-contact braking solutions for scenarios where mechanical wear is a concern

Patent Abstract

The invention relates to a method for braking a rotating element (2) of an assembly (1), wherein a rotor (7) of a rotating eddy current brake (6) is rotatably fixed to the rotating element (2), a stator (8) of the rotating eddy current brake (6) is supported on the assembly (1), and, during the braking operation, an excitation coil assembly (10) of the stator (8) is supplied with rotary current (iS.dq), by an electrical energy source (11) controlled by a control command (R) of a control unit (14), in such a way that a rotary field of the stator (8) rotates at an electrical angular speed (ωS). In order to optimise the braking operation, via a control command (R)-effected adjustment of the electrical angular speed (ωS) of the rotary field of the stator (8), the instantaneous difference ((ωR – ωS)Ist) between an instantaneous electrical angular speed (ωR) of the rotor (7) and the adjusted electrical angular speed (ωS) of the rotary field of the stator (8) is controlled to a desired value ((ωR - ωS) Soll) defined by the control unit (14) or determined by the control unit (14). The invention also relates to a device (5) for braking a rotating element (2) of an assembly (1), and to an assembly (1) having a device (5) of this type.
