Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent describes an electrophoretic transdermal application system designed for controlled delivery of drugs through the skin using an electrical field. The system features two electrodes with a drug-containing matrix in between. By controlling the voltage applied to the electrodes, the pH of the matrix is carefully kept within limits to maintain drug solubility and prevent precipitation, enabling precise and efficient drug delivery. The system can be used with a wide range of acidic or basic therapeutic agents and is particularly effective for delivering drugs that are otherwise challenging to administer transdermally.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Pain management using opioid or non-opioid analgesics via skin patches.
  • Hormone therapy delivered through the skin in controlled doses.
  • Transdermal delivery of antiemetics for nausea prevention in patients.
  • Administration of anti-migraine, antidepressant, antihypertensive, or antiallergy medications via skin patches.
  • On-demand drug administration in response to changing patient needs (e.g., sudden pain episodes).
  • Veterinary use for controlled drug administration in animals.
  • Home-based or ambulatory long-term therapy without repeated injections or oral doses.

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Highly controlled and adjustable drug delivery, allowing for quick adaptation to patient needs.
  • Non-invasive and pain-free alternative to injections or oral medications.
  • Ability to deliver larger and more complex drug molecules that have poor skin penetration in passive systems.
  • Long-term, sustained release with stable plasma concentrations over several days.
  • Reduced risk of side effects due to precise control over dosage and timing.
  • Improved drug stability within the patch due to controlled pH environment, reducing risk of drug precipitation or degradation.
  • Better utilization of expensive or potent drugs due to minimized wastage and efficient delivery.
  • Reduced frequency of dose administration, improving patient compliance.

Patent Abstract

The invention relates to a transdermal application system for the administration of at least one agent through the skin, comprising a first electrode (1), a second electrode (2) and a matrix (3) between the first electrode (1) and eh second electrode (2) and contains at least one agent (4) enthält, selected from basic or acidic agents, wherein the system is designed such that using a voltage applied to the electrodes the pH value of the matrix does not exceed the pK value of the agent (4) in the case of a basic agent (4) and, in the case of an acidic agent (4) does not drop below the pK value of the agent (4).
