Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent discloses an improved antenna array design featuring one or more non-radiating recesses (hollow guides or waveguides) placed near or between the active antennas, which are not actively fed. These recesses can have varied shapes and are specifically engineered to shape surface currents on the array, minimize unwanted electromagnetic effects, and improve the uniformity of the array’s radiation pattern, especially by reducing ripples and interference. The design seeks to achieve a wider field of view, better angular resolution, and more consistent performance compared to traditional arrays that only use 'dummy' antennas or lack such recesses.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Automotive radar systems for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles
  • Aerospace and aviation radar or communication arrays
  • High-frequency wireless communication base stations and networks (such as 5G or 6G)
  • Imaging radar systems (e.g. airport security, industrial monitoring, or medical imaging)
  • Remote sensing and surveillance applications
  • Satellite communications and phased array antennas

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Enhances the uniformity of antenna radiation patterns and reduces ripple effects, leading to more reliable and precise signal detection and imaging.
  • Enables a wider and more effective field of view, beneficial for applications like automotive radar or remote sensing.
  • Reduces parasitic and unintended electromagnetic interactions within the array, thus enhancing angular resolution and signal clarity.
  • Allows for flexible and scalable manufacturing with various techniques (additive manufacturing, metal casting, etc.), supporting integration into different device types and sizes.
  • Facilitates better impedance matching and electromagnetic behavior through the engineered shape and termination of the recesses.
  • Increases overall system performance and safety by providing clearer and more accurate environmental perception.

Patent Abstract

The present invention relates to an antenna array having at least one antenna and having a surface, wherein the antenna is arranged and designed to emit and/or receive electromagnetic waves, characterized in that the antenna array comprises at least one recess, wherein the recess is not an actively fed antenna and/or is geometrically different from the antenna, wherein the recess is a hollow guide, preferably of arbitrary cross-sectional geometry, and the antenna and the recess each extend away from the surface.
