Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent describes a method and control system for rolling mills that prevents the drop in rotational speed of the driving rollers when a new metal piece starts entering the rolling stand ('threading'). By calculating and applying an optimized torque (moment) profile just before the metal enters the rollers, the system ensures that the required rolling speed and torque are achieved precisely at the right moment, thereby avoiding the typical speed 'dip' that can degrade product quality.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Steel, aluminum, copper, or brass sheet and strip rolling in heavy industry
  • Modernization of existing rolling mills to enhance product quality and automation
  • High-speed wire rod or bar rolling mills

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Prevents the temporary drop in roller speed during the threading phase, improving product quality.
  • Enables synchronization of roller speed and torque to the precise needs of the incoming metal, reducing defects such as material loops or dimension errors.
  • Can be integrated into existing (legacy) rolling mills as a software-based control upgrade, saving costs.
  • Reduces wear and energy consumption by optimizing acceleration and deceleration of rollers.
  • Allows flexible and accurate control using physical or data-driven modeling, supporting a wide range of operation scenarios.
  • Minimizes disturbances to downstream processes and improves product uniformity.

Patent Abstract

In a roll stand (1), a rolling material (2) made of metal and having a rolling material leading edge (6) is to be rolled. A time of entry (t3), a rolling speed (vW) and a rolling moment (MW) are known to a control device (7) for the roll stand (1) before the rolling material leading edge (6) runs into the roll stand (1). Before a starting time (t2), which is before the entry time (t3), the control device (7) determines, for a period from the starting time (t2) to the entry time (t3), a moment profile (M) for a roller (3) of the roll stand (1) via a drive (4) driving a drivetrain (5). It controls the drive (4) during the period in accordance with the determined moment profile (M). The control device (7) determines the moment profile (M) starting from a starting state (x2), at the starting time (t2), of the drive (4), of the drivetrain (5) and of the driven rollers (3) of the roll stand (1) such that the driven rollers (3) of the roll stand (1) are acted on by the drivetrain (5) with the rolling moment (MW) at the entry time (t3) and rotate with a circumferential speed (vU) adapted to the rolling speed (vW).
