Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This invention relates to an improved method and apparatus for encoding and decoding audio signals. The innovation lies in selectively applying predictive encoding and decoding techniques only to specific spectral components of the audio signal associated with tonal or harmonic elements, based on a calculated 'spacing value' (typically linked to the fundamental frequency or pitch). This approach allows the encoder and decoder to focus predictive coding on the most relevant parts of the spectrum, reducing computational complexity and improving audio quality, especially at low bit-rates.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Audio codecs for voice over IP (VoIP) or telecommunication systems
  • Streaming music and audio services requiring efficient compression
  • Recording and broadcasting live performances with low-latency requirements
  • Hearing aids or assistive listening devices requiring low-delay, high-quality audio processing
  • Embedded audio systems in consumer electronics (e.g., smart speakers, mobile devices)
  • Professional audio editing and production tools that demand efficient and high-fidelity compression

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Reduces computational requirements and complexity compared to conventional spectral prediction methods
  • Improves audio quality, particularly for tonal and harmonic signals, at low bit-rates
  • Decreases algorithmic delay, making it suitable for real-time and low-delay communication scenarios
  • Enhances efficiency by avoiding prediction on non-tonal, noisy components that do not benefit from prediction
  • Facilitates synchronization between encoder and decoder by using a transmitted spacing value, reducing potential reconstruction errors
  • Can be integrated into standard audio codecs (e.g., MPEG-2 AAC, MPEG-H 3D audio) without major structural changes

Patent Abstract

An encoder for encoding an audio signal. The encoder is configured to encode the audio signal in a transform domain or filter-bank domain, wherein the encoder is configured to determine spectral coefficients of the audio signal for a current frame and at least one previous frame, wherein the encoder is configured to selectively apply predictive encoding to a plurality of individual spectral coefficients or groups of spectral coefficients which are separated by at least one spectral coefficient.
