Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent describes an endoscope equipped with special hardware and software that enables it to capture depth (3D) data inside the body. By using a modulated light source and advanced evaluation electronics, the endoscope can estimate the distance of objects within its field of view, providing a depth map in addition to traditional visual images.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Medical diagnostics and minimally invasive surgeries where it's crucial to understand the spatial layout of tissues or organs
  • Early and accurate detection of tumors, polyps, or abnormal growths by visualizing depth information
  • Guidance during complex endoscopic procedures such as biopsies, suturing, or device placements
  • Research settings needing detailed anatomical mapping
  • Development of improved training simulators for clinicians using real depth data

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Provides real-time 3D depth information alongside regular images, enhancing situational awareness for surgeons
  • May improve diagnosis and precision during medical procedures by offering additional spatial context
  • Reduces the risk of accidental injury by helping clinicians judge depth more accurately
  • Potentially enables automation or guidance features in endoscopic systems based on depth data
  • Can improve patient outcomes through more informed and accurate interventions

Patent Abstract

The endoscope has a light source (102), and light guide optics (104, 106) to receive and to feed light that is received from a light exit (118) to a tip. A sensor (108) receives light that is transmitted from another exit (114) and generates a sensor signal representing the received light. A modulation unit (110) controls the source based on modulation information in such a manner that the source transmits a modulated light signal. An evaluation unit (112) e.g. digital signal processor (DSP), connected with the sensor evaluates the sensor signal to compute depth data. An independent claim is also included for a method for the acquisition of depth data with an endoscope.
