The method involves reading (1) a volume data set for the intermediate storage in a physical memory. A set of decomposition rules is provided for the decomposition of a read volume data set in a sequence of two-dimensional macro blocks. A set of prediction modes is provided for predicting a part of a volume signal to compress the respective macro block. An optimal combination of volume-adjusted decomposition rule and volume-adjusted prediction mode is selected (6) to configure the compression. A compressed data stream is generated (7) on the basis of the configured compression process. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for decompressing a volume data set; (2) a system for configuring a compression system; and (3) a computer program product with a computer program.
