Welding Electrode and Use of the Welding Electrode
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention presents a welding electrode for resistance welding, where the contact surface is made of boron-doped diamond. This unique surface helps prevent sticking (adhesion) of the electrode to metal workpieces, particularly those made of aluminum. The diamond layer is deposited using a CVD process and can be used with various alloyed metals, greatly increasing the electrode's lifespan and performance in welding joints through effective breaking of oxide layers on metals like aluminum.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Resistance spot welding of aluminum sheets in automotive manufacturing.
- Industrial welding of metals with passivating oxide layers (e.g., Al, Mg, Ni, Ti, Zn, Cr, Fe, Nb, Ta, Cu).
- Production lines requiring high-frequency spot welding without frequent electrode replacement.
- Automation lines for packaging, electronics, or appliances involving metal joining.
- Resistance seam or projection welding applications where electrode sticking is problematic.
- Repair welding of lightweight structural aluminum parts.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Significantly reduces or eliminates sticking between electrode and metal workpieces, especially aluminum.
- Enables production of a much higher number of welds (over 1,000) per electrode, resulting in longer tool life and less downtime.
- Allows for high-current-density welding, improving speed and efficiency.
- Breaks through tough metal oxide layers on workpieces, ensuring reliable electrical contact and strong welds.
- Diamond-coated surface offers superior hardness, wear resistance, and thermal/electrical conductivity.
- Potentially reduces operating costs by minimizing electrode maintenance and replacement frequency.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a welding electrode for resistance welding, formed by a welding tool made of a metal, said welding tool having a contact surface (1) that comes into contact with the workpiece (9) to be welded. In order to avoid adhesion between the contact surface (1) and a workpiece made, in particular from aluminium, it is suggested in the invention that the contact surface (1) is made of diamond doped with boron.
