Method for Passivation of a Metallic Surface
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention discloses a method for passivating the surface of lightweight metal components (such as those made from aluminum or magnesium) by applying a special conversion layer. This layer is formed using an aqueous passivation solution that contains calcium phosphate, oxides, hydroxides, and amino acids, with its composition inspired by the makeup of human blood. The resulting protective layer significantly improves corrosion resistance and compatibility with further coatings.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Automotive manufacturing (e.g., coatings for car body parts, chassis, structural frames, both inside and outside the vehicle)
- Aerospace industry (e.g., lightweight structural parts)
- Consumer electronics (e.g., casings and frames made from aluminum or magnesium alloys)
- Building and construction (e.g., protective coating for lightweight metal panels or components)
- Bicycle and sports equipment manufacturing (e.g., metal parts subject to corrosion)
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Significantly increased corrosion resistance for lightweight metals, especially aluminum and magnesium
- Reduced risk of contact corrosion when joined with dissimilar metals (such as aluminums, steel, zinc, or carbon fiber composites)
- Enhanced adhesion and compatibility with subsequent coatings (such as primers and top coats)
- Improved process compatibility for complex multi-coating industrial finishing lines
- Eco-friendly and safer than some traditional passivation/coating methods, avoiding toxic ingredients
- The composition closely mimics human blood plasma, leading to optimal chemical properties for passivation
- Reduced occurrence of localized corrosion and improved overall metal surface protection

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a method for passivating a metal surface (25) of a light-weight metal part (3), wherein a conversion layer (5) is applied to the surface (25) of the light-weight metal part (3) in a passivation step (P). According to the invention, a passivation step (P) is carried out wherein an aqueous passivation solution is used to create a calcium phosphate-containing conversion layer (5) on the metal surface (25) of the part (3), said conversion layer (5) comprising oxides and hydroxides from the material of the part (3) and from the passivation solution and containing amino acids.
