Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes an audio processing apparatus and method that improves the quality of upmix signal representations (converting a compressed audio signal with mixed sound objects into separate audio channels, e.g., for surround sound). By intelligently adjusting the parameters used in the upmixing process using both user preferences and information about the individual audio objects (such as their level, tonality, and inter-object relationships), the system reduces or prevents audible distortions that can occur when reconstructing multi-channel audio from an information-efficient downmix. The invention covers not only audio decoders but also transcoders, encoders, bitstreams, and computer programs that perform such quality-optimized parametric upmixing.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Consumer audio playback devices (home theaters, soundbars, headphones) that support surround or 3D audio experiences from compressed or streamed content.
- Professional audio editing, mixing, or broadcasting tools where high-quality object-based audio playback or manipulation is required.
- Teleconferencing systems seeking improved speaker separation and clarity using multi-channel audio rendering.
- Streaming services or media players that need to adapt audio content dynamically to different playback setups while minimizing artifacts.
- Automotive infotainment systems delivering immersive audio experiences from compact encoded sources.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Reduces or eliminates undesirable sound artifacts and distortions during upmixing, leading to higher audio fidelity.
- Allows flexible and interactive user control over audio object rendering (volume, position), while automatically constraining settings to avoid quality loss.
- Efficient in computation and bitrate, making multi-channel audio practical for transmission, storage, and real-time applications.
- Adaptive to different playback setups (mono, stereo, surround, headphones) without compromising sound quality.
- Improves user experience through smoother, artifact-free audio across diverse content and device ecosystems.

Patent Abstract
An apparatus for providing one or more adjusted parameters for a provision of an upmix signal representation on the basis of a downmix signal representation and an object-related parametric information comprises a parameter adjuster. The parameter adjuster is configured to receive one or more input parameters and to provide, on the basis thereof, one or more adjusted parameters. The parameter adjuster is configured to provide the one or more adjusted parameters in dependence on the one or more input parameters and the object-related parametric information, such that a distortion of the upmix signal representation caused by the use of non-optimal parameters is reduced at least for input parameters deviating from optimal parameters by more than a predetermined deviation.
