Substrate with antimicrobial coating, antimicrobial packaging material and method for producing same
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes a substrate (such as plastic, metal, or paper) coated with an antimicrobial layer that contains at least one Maillard product, preferably melanoidin. It extends to packaging materials and cleaning agents that use these natural products to provide antimicrobial effects, prolonging food shelf life and improving hygiene. The invention also covers methods for manufacturing such coated substrates and packaging materials, either by applying a Maillard product-containing coating or by incorporating the Maillard products directly into the material during production. Maillard products, especially melanoidins, can be sourced from coffee byproducts or other food industry residues, making them cost-effective and sustainable.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Packaging materials for food storage, such as cling film, bags, boxes, and wraps, to reduce bacterial growth and prolong shelf life.
- Antimicrobial coatings for surfaces and containers in contact with food products in households, restaurants, and food processing industries.
- Production of cleaning agents for kitchens and food industry environments to prevent microbial contamination.
- Utilization in biodegradable packaging solutions to enhance both sustainability and food safety.
- Application on both rigid and flexible packaging for a wide range of foods, including ready meals, fresh produce, and leftovers.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Provides a natural, non-toxic, and biodegradable antimicrobial barrier that is safe for use with food.
- Helps reduce the growth of microorganisms on packaging surfaces, thereby extending the shelf life of food products.
- Enables environmentally friendly use of waste materials (such as coffee grounds) to obtain active antimicrobial agents, supporting circular economy principles.
- Offers versatile manufacturing approaches (coating or incorporation into materials) suited for large-scale production.
- Can be applied to a wide variety of materials and packaging forms, enhancing food safety across many products and scenarios.

Patent Abstract
Substrate comprises an antimicrobial coating comprising at least one Maillard product, preferably melanoidin. Independent claims are also included for: (1) an antimicrobial packaging material comprising at least one Maillard product, preferably melanoidin; (2) producing the substrate with antimicrobial coating, comprising (a) providing a substrate, (b) providing a mixture containing at least one Maillard product, for coating the substrate, (c) applying the mixture on the surface of the substrate, and (d) curing the mixture to form a Maillard product containing coating; and (3) producing the antimicrobial packaging material, comprising (i) providing a mixture for producing a molded body or a film, (ii) adding at least one Maillard product containing component to the mixture, and (iii) carrying out machine molding of the film or the molded body made of the Maillard product containing material.
