Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This invention describes a miniature loudspeaker (acoustic actuator) that utilizes a magnetostrictive layer deposited onto a support structure. The core innovation is that the actuator generates sound through the magnetostrictive effect—where the dimensions of the material change under a magnetic field, causing a self-supporting structure to vibrate. The magnetic field is generated by coils integrated into the same chip as the actuator, enabling significant miniaturization and integration.

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Extremely compact and suitable for chip-scale integration, enabling miniaturization of electronic devices
  • Low power consumption due to the efficient magnetostrictive effect and closed magnetic circuit
  • High output sound levels in the audible range despite the small size
  • Monolithic (on-chip) integration of actuator and driving electronics, simplifying assembly and reducing cost
  • Flexibility to function as both speaker and microphone (acoustic transducer)
  • Manufacturing processes utilize standard chemical and micromechanical methods, which can lower production costs and complexity
  • Reduced electromagnetic interference due to closed magnetic circuit design

Patent Abstract

An acoustic actuator comprises a support layer (3), in which a self-supporting structure (1) is defined which is connected to the support layer (3) by means of at least two suspensions (7), at least one magnetostrictive layer (4) which has been put on the support layer (3) and is provided at least in part on the self-supporting structure (1), and means (2; 5) for generating a magnetic field in the magnetostrictive layer (4). The way in which the loudspeaker works is based on the magnetostrictive effect, which results in a change in the dimensions of the self-supporting structure in an alternating magnetic field. This causes the self-supporting structure to oscillate.
