Process and System for Providing Hydrogen Gas
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention describes a process and system for efficiently producing hydrogen gas from a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC). The system uses a two-stage process: first, it releases hydrogen from the charged LOHC in a dehydrogenation reactor using a catalyst. Then, the partially used LOHC undergoes a catalytic oxidation in a separate reactor, producing heat. This heat is transferred back to support the hydrogen-releasing reaction, making the system more energy efficient. The process involves transforming specific chemical groups within the carrier to enhance overall efficiency.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Supplying hydrogen fuel for fuel cell vehicles, such as buses, trucks, trains, or ships.
- Providing on-demand hydrogen for stationary energy storage or backup power systems.
- Industrial hydrogen generation for chemical processes or manufacturing.
- Mobile hydrogen supply units for remote locations or events.
- Hydrogen refueling stations using LOHC-based storage and release systems.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Greatly improved thermal efficiency by recycling heat from the oxidation step to drive hydrogen release, reducing external energy input.
- Safe and practical hydrogen storage in liquid organic carriers, which are safer and easier to handle than compressed or liquefied hydrogen gas.
- Dynamic and automated control suitable for variable hydrogen demand, such as in vehicle applications or flexible grid storage.
- Minimized carrier degradation and optimized carrier recycling, increasing economic and environmental sustainability.
- Reduces need for external heat sources, enabling compact, self-contained or mobile hydrogen supply units.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to a process for providing hydrogen gas, comprising a catalytic dehydrogenation of an at least partially charged hydrogen carrier medium to an at least partially discharged hydrogen carrier medium in a dehydrogenation reactor (9), thereby releasing hydrogen gas, a catalytic oxidation of the at least partially discharged hydrogen carrier medium in an oxidation catalyst to form an at least partially oxidized hydrogen carrier medium in an oxidation reactor (28), and a transmission of heat generated in the oxidation reactor (28) to the dehydrogenation reactor (9). The catalytic oxidation comprises the conversion of at least one of the alkylene groups into a keto group.
