Use of a Formic Acid Alkylester And/or an Oxymethylene Dimethyl Ether or Polyoxymethylene Dimethyl Ether
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This invention relates to the use of formic acid alkyl esters and/or oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OME) as fuel additives or as components injected into the combustion chamber of internal combustion engines, specifically diesel engines. These additives, when combined with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system that adjusts air intake based on measured oxygen content in the exhaust, enable a reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and other pollutants during engine operation compared to using conventional fuel alone.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Automotive industry for reducing emissions from diesel and gasoline vehicles.
- Power generators running on internal combustion engines that need to comply with strict emission regulations.
- Retrofitting existing diesel engines in commercial trucks and public transportation fleets to reduce NOx emissions.
- Industrial machinery powered by internal combustion engines seeking cleaner operation.
- Marine engines operating in emission-controlled areas.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Significant reduction of NOx emissions in internal combustion engines, contributing to better air quality.
- Simultaneous reduction of particulate matter and unburned organic emissions in exhaust gases.
- Enables compliance with current and future emission standards for diesel engines without sacrificing engine performance.
- Additive can be incorporated into existing fuel infrastructures, requiring little to no modification to current distribution systems.
- Improved engine flexibility by allowing EGR to operate even under full-load conditions, enhancing emission control throughout all engine operating states.

Patent Abstract
The invention relates to the use of at least one formic acid alkyl ester of formula HCO-O-R, wherein R is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an aryl group having 6 carbon atoms, and/or at least one oxymethylene dimethyl ether or polyoxymethlene dimethyl ether (OME) of formula H3C-O-(CH2O)n-CH3, wherein 1 ≤ n ≤ 5, as an additive to the fuel for a diesel engine or as a component, which is additional to the fuel and can be injected into a combustion chamber of a diesel engine, for reducing the emission of NOx during operation of the diesel engine compared with the operation of said engine using only fuel. During operation of the diesel engine, a portion of an exhaust gas produced during operation of the diesel engine is recirculated into a/the combustion chamber of the diesel engine, wherein an amount of air supplied to the combustion chamber of the diesel engine per combustion process is reduced to the amount of air required for complete combustion of the fuel and, on the basis of the oxygen content of the exhaust gas, the amount of air is also reduced more when the oxygen content of the exhaust gas is greater.
