Articulated Chain Device
Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
This patent describes a jointed link chain device that uses a tensioning wire or cable made from a shape memory alloy (such as Nickel-Titanium, NiTi) to switch between a stiff (fixed) and a flexible state. By electrically heating or cooling the shape memory wire, the chain can be locked rigidly or made flexible without manual force or mechanical cranks. The device is especially suited as an adjustable holding arm or mount, such as for medical surgical instruments, where precise and vibration-free positioning is required.
Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Holding arms for surgical or medical instruments (e.g., neurosurgical retractors, clamps for operating tools).
- Adjustable articulated arms for lamps, microphones, or cameras in medical or industrial settings.
- Precision mounting systems where position locking without vibrations is critical, such as in microscopy or electronics assembly.
- Robotic arms or assist tools that need to frequently alternate between rigid and flexible states.
- Consumer devices such as mobile device mounts, automotive rear-view mirrors, or flexible stands requiring periodic adjustment and locking.
BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.
- Allows precise, nearly vibration-free locking and unlocking of the arm’s position, reducing risk in sensitive environments (e.g., surgery).
- No need for manual mechanical locking mechanisms (like cranks), enabling hands-free or remote operation.
- Flexible design: can be constructed from metal or plastic and integrated with embedded wiring or surface features to improve grip and stability.
- Improved workflow and safety by removing the need for assistants to stabilize instruments during arm adjustment.
- Shape memory alloy enables smooth, gradual transitions between flexible and rigid states without sudden jerks.

Patent Abstract
The inventive link chain device comprises a plurality of link elements (10; 110) which form the link chain (7; 107), and a tension device which comprises at least one tension rope extending through the link elements (10; 110) or at least one tension wire (8, 108) extending through the link elements (10; 110). The link chain (7; 107) can be produced by tensing the tension rope or the tension wire (8, 108) in a fixed state, wherein adjacent link elements (10, 110) are fixed in relation to each other, and by tensing the tension rope or tension wire (8; 108) in a flexible state, wherein adjacent link elements (10; 110) can be moved in relation to each other. The inventive link chain device is characterised in that the tension device comprises a shape memory element (8) or a shape memory spring (115) which is arranged and configured in such a manner that the fixed state can be brought about or cancelled by altering the state of the shape of the shape memory element (8) and/or the shape memory spring (115).
