Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This invention describes a surface that is engineered to be non-wettable (hydrophobic) by using an array of flexible filaments attached to the surface. These filaments have precise dimensions, spacing, and elasticity, and are made or coated such that water does not adhere to or soak the surface. The filaments' structure allows the retention of air, which prevents water from wetting the material, even after being submerged for a prolonged period.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Manufacturing of self-cleaning or water-repellent textiles (e.g., swimwear, wetsuits, raincoats)
  • Surface coating for ship hulls or pipes to reduce water drag and prevent fouling
  • Production of dry bags or waterproof covers
  • Creation of anti-fouling or non-wettable surfaces for industrial equipment
  • Application in medical devices where dry, sterile surfaces are needed
  • Development of improved sportswear or outdoor gear with quick-drying properties

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Provides strong water-repellent properties, keeping surfaces dry even after submersion
  • Reduces friction/resistance when objects move through water (e.g., swimsuits, ship hulls)
  • Self-cleaning effect, as dirt can be easily washed away by water without wetting the surface
  • Prevents and reduces biofouling by inhibiting organism adhesion
  • Improves thermal insulation by trapping air pockets
  • Enables production of lightweight, quick-drying textiles and materials

Patent Abstract

The invention relates to an object comprising a surface with filaments, whose length ranges between 30 and 6000 µm, which have a ratio of diameter to length of between 1 : 10 and 1 : 20 and which are bonded to the surface by at least one end face. According to the invention, the distance between two filaments on the surface is such that the ratio of said distance to the length of the filaments is between 1 : 3 and 1 : 10, the filaments have an elasticity of between 104 bis 1010 N/m2and the surface of the filaments is hydrophobic in such a way that the contact angle between a filament and water is greater than 100°.
