Simple SummaryContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

This patent describes newly identified nucleic acid and polypeptide sequences, particularly polypeptides containing a homeodomain, that can regulate lipid metabolism and are involved in the prevention or treatment of various diseases. The invention identifies how specific fragments of ceramide synthase with the homeodomain influence lipid balance (lipolysis and lipogenesis) and can alter disease states such as metabolic disorders, cancer, diabetes, and immune-related diseases. Furthermore, it provides methods for creating, screening, and using these molecules or their inhibitors in pharmaceuticals, food, dietary supplements, and other compositions to manage lipid-related diseases and modulate the immune system.

Use CasesContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Development of new drugs to prevent or treat lipid-based metabolic diseases (e.g., obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidemia)
  • Cancer therapies targeting sphingolipid/ceramide pathways
  • Pharmaceuticals for neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmunity, sepsis, cystic fibrosis
  • Production of dietary supplements or fortified food products to control fat metabolism or promote anti-aging
  • Screening platforms for discovering novel compounds affecting lipid metabolism or immune modulation
  • Gene therapy or RNA-based treatments (using antisense, RNAi, microRNA) for metabolic or immune diseases
  • Topical or systemic use of the polypeptide compositions as ointments, patches, pills, or injections

BenefitsContent extracted from patent full text and abstract with AI.

  • Enables targeted intervention in the lipid metabolic pathway for a wide range of diseases
  • Provides a novel approach for modulating the balance between fat storage and fat breakdown
  • Offers opportunities for non-pharmaceutical interventions (e.g., foods, supplements) for weight management and metabolic health
  • Potential application as anti-aging treatments or immune modulators
  • Introduces new molecular targets (ceramide synthase fragments) for drug discovery
  • Applicable in both preventive and therapeutic contexts for chronic diseases
  • Supports precision therapies by using genetic or RNA-based tools to specifically regulate disease pathways

Patent Abstract

The present invention relates in a first aspect to polypeptides useful for the prevention or treatment of various diseases. In particular, the present invention relates to a polypeptide containing a homeodomain for the prevention or treatment of lipid-based metabolic diseases, cancer, (neuro)degeneration, autoimmunity, sepsis, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, or for modulating the immune system in an individual or as an anti aging compound. In another aspect, the present invention relates to nucleic acids encoding said polypeptides, vectors containing said nucleic acid molecules as well as host cells comprising said vector. Further, the present invention concerns isolated antisense RNA or DNA molecules. In addition, the present invention provides methods for screening compounds for treating or preventing said diseases based on the ability to alter expression of ceramide synthases and its cleavage.
